While it's not the $20 that some have claimed to buy these for, I think it was still a heck of a price. After I mentioned to the store owner that the bridge pin holes did not go through the bridge pad, but behind it (similar to some Gibson F-25s I have seen), he and I agreed on a $200 price. I want to thank all those who answered my query. And they go for extremely reasonable prices these days. Seems like there's not a lot of love for vintage Washburns hereabouts (it is a Martin forum after all), but for tone, volume (it is loud!), playability, looks and overall quality I'd put this guitar up against any Martin or Gibson of it's size. The luthier apparently took measurements from the guitar so he could build a copy, as he liked the repaired guitar so much. He repaired many side and top cracks, reset the neck, reglued and replaced some of the braces and put a replacement (looks like a Martin) bridge on it. It was originally discovered in a dumpster in Portland, Oregon and my friend gave it to his luthier buddy (who's name escapes me, but he apparently lives in Eugene now) who totally reubuilt it. It was a gift from a great friend who had it for years. It is the nicest sounding acoustic guitar I've ever owned. It is my #1 acoustic guitar and I play ragtime and country blues on it. By the way it has had steel strings on it since it was rebuilt sometime in the '80s with no problem. I recently replaced the tuners (it had some cheapies on it when I got it) with Golden Age Restoration Tuners I got from Stew-Mac. I have Martin steel strings on it starting with.

It has rosewood (looks like Brazilian to me) back and sides, mahogony neck, spruce top and an ebony nut. The guitar pictured in my avatar is my Washburn New Model 1897. The neck is monstrous and the tuners seem to be OK.Īnyone have any experience with an old Washburn for finger pickiong? Jim Another $100-150 for a new nut and regrooving the bridge (Changing it to lefty.) There are so few old guitars that could be made suitable for a lefty that I'm thinking of getting it as a player. The top is in good shape, very thin. The shop is asking $300. If it is still there this weekend, I'm thinking of going back with my mirror and light and long ruler to check it out.

The sides are quarter sawn and the back appears to be rif sawn with a lousily repaired crack vertically on the slab part. While the salesman said it was BRW, I found that Washburn used IRW also and I think that is what the back and sides are. It is not original as it has been changed from a tailpiece to a bridge pin mounting. The ebony nut was heavily grooved as was the low saddle. Last weekend I spied an old unlabled 12 fret guitar hanging on the wall of my favorite used guitar shop.
